Young Goodman Brown

1) An allegory to "Young Goodman Brown" is a Journey through life. It shows that people come in conflict with temptation and weather or not are able to resist. Also that we are in a fight to keep faith because it can be lost easily.

2) Pink Ribbons could symbolize innocence and purity. When the ribbons are with faith there is innocence and purity, but when it's not with her, there is no innocence or purity.

Faith herself is a symbol of faith. When Goodman Brown goes from faith into the dark and gloomy woods.

The traveler's staff: It has a snake on it which symbolizes evil and suggests that the traveler is perhaps the devil.

3) I think the images in the forest were an illusion because i think the chances that the minister would have been going through the forest and stopped right near Goodman Brown and started to talk about the communion were next to none.

4) Goodman Brown, Faith, minister, Deacon Gookin, first and second traveler, old dame (goody cloyse)

5) The egyptian magi turned the staffs into snakes and that was an allusion to what moses can do to god. King Williams palace is an allusion to that the second traveler is very wise person of the world and would be comfortable anywhere, no matter who was there.

6) I had a hard time understanding it, but i thought it was a good story. I liked how it had a witch crafty feel to it. Also how it left you thinking about weather the images in the forest were real or not. It kept you thinking the whole time about what was going to happen next, or if what had just happened actually happened.

7) Hawthorne seemed to really get into his characters. I think the forest images were well thought out. He had lots of symbols and allusions, which helped the magical feel.

8) I think the theme is good vs. evil. Through out the story there is challenges against evil. When he doesn't want to leave faith, but has to and goes into the dark, gloomy woods. Also when Goodman Brown is trying to pray, but a dark cloud covers the opening.
