words of the day 3

The dogmatic detective demanded that everyone leave the crime scene.

The girl’s egregious shot cost them the game.

On a brisk fall night, a group of teens broke into a building and dissipated at the sound of sirens.

The boy’s basketball team was disparaged at the awards banquet compared to the girls.

There was confusion on weather the boys or girls basketball team plays first, so the girl’s coach asked the activities director to elucidate who plays first.

The basketball team's torpid defensive slides caused them to run 8 lines.

When the tempestuous kids ran through the house, their mother scolded them because she just got done cleaning it.

When we visited NYC we saw the empire state building, which was the biggest edifice I have ever seen.

The decorous family was offended when a group of young boys whirled through their house and trashed it.

During Mr. Feelgood’s funeral, his son wrote an eulogium that left everyone remembering all the happy memories.

The team did not show any propriety when they were laughing while someone got hurt, even though it was toward a different matter.

The sagacious old man shared his knowledge about gold panning with his grandchildren.

The girl’s voluminous hair made her look like a model.

The coach's arguous style of coaching caused the girls to win regionals.

Our alacrity for the boy’s basketball game drained all of our energy for our game.

The languid speaker bored his listeners out of their minds.

Young Goodman Brown

1) An allegory to "Young Goodman Brown" is a Journey through life. It shows that people come in conflict with temptation and weather or not are able to resist. Also that we are in a fight to keep faith because it can be lost easily.

2) Pink Ribbons could symbolize innocence and purity. When the ribbons are with faith there is innocence and purity, but when it's not with her, there is no innocence or purity.

Faith herself is a symbol of faith. When Goodman Brown goes from faith into the dark and gloomy woods.

The traveler's staff: It has a snake on it which symbolizes evil and suggests that the traveler is perhaps the devil.

3) I think the images in the forest were an illusion because i think the chances that the minister would have been going through the forest and stopped right near Goodman Brown and started to talk about the communion were next to none.

4) Goodman Brown, Faith, minister, Deacon Gookin, first and second traveler, old dame (goody cloyse)

5) The egyptian magi turned the staffs into snakes and that was an allusion to what moses can do to god. King Williams palace is an allusion to that the second traveler is very wise person of the world and would be comfortable anywhere, no matter who was there.

6) I had a hard time understanding it, but i thought it was a good story. I liked how it had a witch crafty feel to it. Also how it left you thinking about weather the images in the forest were real or not. It kept you thinking the whole time about what was going to happen next, or if what had just happened actually happened.

7) Hawthorne seemed to really get into his characters. I think the forest images were well thought out. He had lots of symbols and allusions, which helped the magical feel.

8) I think the theme is good vs. evil. Through out the story there is challenges against evil. When he doesn't want to leave faith, but has to and goes into the dark, gloomy woods. Also when Goodman Brown is trying to pray, but a dark cloud covers the opening.

Self-Reliance

1) A) They come to realize that they should accept themselves for who they are, not who they are pretending or pretend to be based on the rest of society.

B) Emerson says: “envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide;” he is saying that you’re killing yourself and not letting yourself live if you live the life that is expected by society. His alternative is for you to embrace the real you, and not care what the rest of society is doing.

2) A) Society asks each person for conformity, but Emerson suggests that people should strive for self-reliance instead.

B) He advocates nonconformity because he believed that people should behave as themselves, and not how the rest of society is acting. When he says nonconformity he is saying that people shouldn’t behave in accordance with socially accepted stantards.

3) A) That you should act on your own beliefs all the time, not only when you are alone, but when you are among the rest of society.

B) That you shouldn’t be afraid, and should be allowed to do what you want to. This is something to strive for because it shows a sense of freedom and opportunity for you to be who you want to be.

4) A) They spoke what they felt and followed what they believed in.

B) Great people might be inconsistent because their thoughts and beliefs are changing from day to day because they aren't afraid to show what they believe in. Emerson doesn't think it's important to be consistent, but to rather speak what you wish, even if it changes the next day

5) A) Yes I agree with Emerson because you know and understand yourself the best and should let that person shine, and by doing so you find the true meaning of life. I think that someone that is more self-reliant will go farther in life than those who aren’t, because you are the one person you can fully trust, and trusting in yourself will make you go far.

B) I think they have the greatest impact on society because they will follow their own dreams, and that might inspire other people to do the same and break free from the ways of society. They can change society because they are very passionate about breaking free and following your own path and standing up for what you believe in. I think president Obama has had a great impact on our culture, because people are starting to realize that the color of your skin doesn't matter, but rather your ethics.
